Does spirulina help you lose weight?
Don’t ask what spirulina does, ask what it does not do! It has more protein than meat, more calcium than milk, more B-12 than liver, more vitamin E than wheat germ, more iron than spinach and more beta carotene than carrots.
It is called a super food. It can help build muscle and reduce fat. It (it is blue-green algae) grows in frozen ice and in boiling springs where no other life can grow. Before any plants or animals existed, it put oxygen in the atmosphere. Most nutritionists drink greens drinksĀ which contain spirulina and other super foods like chlorella, barley grass etc.
All that being said, if you replace a portion of your daily animal-protein intake with protein-rich plant sources (such as spirulina), you can experience a decrease in body-weight. This comes from the fact that spirulina is about 55-77% protein by weight, with very few extra calories. That said, if you’re already a vegetarian, you’ll only get a marginal benefit from spirulina compared to protein from legumes/beans/etc , which can supply all necessary amino acids without making you gain weight.
